Alumna is an author, therapist and teacher
Dr. Patsy Koay graduated from St. Cloud State University in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and advertising. Her time at SCSU laid a solid foundation for furthering her education.
Koay said she is grateful for her time at SCSU. She emphasized that her education was not simply about gaining knowledge or achieving grades, but learning how to be a critical thinker.
“It’s not about how great you are,” she said. “It’s about how you become a critical thinker.”
The program at SCSU, especially the professors, played a vital role in shaping her outlook on life.
That mindset led her on a path of service and compassion. In 2024, Koay published the book “Refugee Is Not My Name Anymore,” which discusses her experiences working with refugees in Malaysia in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Through those stories, she sheds light on the resilience of individuals and the importance of empathy and healing.
Koay’s work is deeply rooted in her belief in love, joy, peace and happiness.
“It’s how you equip yourself to make sure when you see the darkness, you also see the light,” she said. “I want to share and inspire more people from the low energy to shift up.”
Today, Koay is an accredited spiritual psychotherapist and a psychology teacher, specializing in resilience counseling. Her work empowers individuals to navigate life’s challenges and rediscover their inner strength. Through her sessions, teachings and writing, she has become a beacon of hope to those seeking guidance and healing.
In recognition of her impact, Koay was honored with the International Inspiring Woman 2025 Award, a testament to her dedication and the effect she has had on communities across the globe.
Reflecting on her journey, she shared one of her most cherished life lessons: “Love life, because life will then love you back.”
From a Malaysian student in Minnesota to an inspiring global voice for change, Koay’s journey is a reminder that education, compassion and purpose can truly transform the world.
