Sandeep Acharya has made a career of connecting people and businesses with technology.
Originally from Nepal, Acharya transferred to St. Cloud State University in 1995. While on campus he was part of starting the first Nepalese Students Association, which hosted the University’s first Nepalese Students Day. SCSU’s welcoming community is part of what drew Acharya to transfer in the first place.
“St. Cloud's always been very supportive to the international students,” he said. “Everybody I dealt with there had been very supportive, so it felt comfortable.”
He graduated with his degree in marketing as well as business computers and information systems in 1999, before starting his career with TempWorks Software. He worked his way up to director of operations with the company before co-founding Avionte Staffing Software. He exited Avionte toward the end of 2013, before moving back to Nepal in 2014. After waiting out a noncompete clause, Acharya co-founded Aqore Staffing Software with fellow SCSU alumnus Samar Basnet ’02. Acharya, who is CEO of Aqore, is based out of Nepal while Basnet works out of Dallas, Texas.
Acharya is proud that his company helps others find work, especially those in his home country.
“Coming from Nepal, we really like being able to create job opportunities in Nepal — and these are high-paying jobs. Nepal is fairly low on the scale economy wise, so being able to actually give back to my home country has been a great experience. And it's not just about giving back,” he said. “I think it's about employees getting to be in Nepal and dream big. And that's usually a very difficult thing for them, because a lot of them think they have to get out of the country to do these things or sometimes they might not even have access to do that. Being able to actually build a software company in a country like Nepal and actually impact a country here in the U.S. with that — I love that aspect of my job.”
It’s rewarding for Acharya to help young professionals jumpstart their careers as well.
“I’m the biggest cheerleader for people to grow, and people who maybe haven't seen the dream and maybe don't have an idea of where that could take them,” he said. “We see some young people with a lot of energy, but not necessarily direction. So that's been one of my biggest, energizing parts of this experience.”
